Sacred Space

We invite you to make a 'Sacred Space' in your day, and spend ten minutes, praying here and now, as you sit at your computer, with the help of on-screen guidance and scripture chosen specially every day.

Something to think and pray about this week

Jesus is quoted as telling us to gouge out our eye if it scandalises us. It is a graphic Hebrew way of telling us to recognise the occasions of sin and what have been called our predominant passions. What is my fatal flaw? Sometimes it takes a close friend or one of the family, to reveal to us the weakness that is most likely to lead us astray. Some fail more by lack of control, some by too much control, making others‘ life a misery for the sake of tidiness and order. In its own way that is the eye scandalising you - when you cannot bear the sight of a full ashtray. Jesus is saying: Be aware of your weak point. It may be the eye, lustful, envious or critical; or the greedy or cruel hand; or the caustic or deceitful tongue. It may be the love of money - Saint James is strong on that. It may be our sexuality - the theologian Origen was so upset by carnal temptations that he castrated himself. It was not something the church admired in him. God calls us to live with our sexuality and transform it into a vehicle of love, not to root it out. This evening Jesus tells us to know ourselves in our weaknesses as in our strengths. No two of us are alike.

It might seem strange to pray at your computer, in front of a screen, especially if there are other people around you, or distracting noises. But God is everywhere, all around us, constantly reaching out to us, even in the most unlikely situations. When we know this, and with a bit of practice, we can pray anywhere! The following pages will guide you through a session of prayer, in six stages, including preparing your body and mind, and culminating in reflection on a scripture passage chosen specially for the day. The stages are:
The Presence of God

Freedom

Consciousness

The Word

Conversation

Conclusion
Although they are written in the first person -- "I" -- the prayers are for doing, rather than for reading out. Each stage is a kind of exercise or meditation aimed at helping you get in touch with God, and God's presence in your life.
